It came as a shock when Guy Ritchie was chosen as the Movie director of ‘Sherlock Holmes.’ Known primarily for his work on indie criminal activity films, for example ‘Snatch’ and’RocknRolla,’ Ritchie had never taken on a mainstream franchise film, the kind of which ‘Sherlock Holmes’ guaranteed to be. Fortunately, Ritchie was able to mesh the two genres on some degree, together with his trademark type of film-making ever present in his latest outing. The outcome is a movie that will certainly demonstrate typically the most popular take on the character beyond Conan Doyle’s authentic novels, and will also likely spawn a franchise so watch this space it wont be long before Sherlock Homes 2 is out.

Guy Ritchie’s re-imagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s legendary detective Sherlock Holmes takes the original character and changes him for modern viewers. The environment is the same (Victorian England) however Holmes is now as successful with his fists as he is with his capabilities of deduction.Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his companion, Dr. Watson (Jude Law), become embroiled in a puzzle which seems to suggest genuine diabolism. A recently executed Lord has risen from the grave and Scotland Yard is baffled. We follow Holmes & Watson as they operate their way through London looking for clues that will uncover the answer to this mystery. It is not long before we see Detective Sherlock Holmes and his companion Watson engage in a battle of wits and brawn with a nemesis whose plot is a danger to all of England.

The movie is beautifully acted and exhibits once again what an incredible actor Robert Downey Jr. is as he conducts himself into the personality of the master sleuth with all of his style. Jude Law delivers a headstrong Watson who, in spite of his finest endeavours to begin a family existence, is usually there for Holmes when he needs him. Backed up by a great additional cast. Being a contemporary take on the story it is barely unexpected that the film features a large number of special effects, including an array of flat paintings to replicate London of the era. For me, sometimes it would be preferable to scale back and develop more close shot sequences instead of using the computer – the film does has too many computer generated shots that become a bit too annoying

However, that said I like this movie… a great deal… and I think it could entertain you, too. It left me happy- liked it a lot. It was fascinating, funny, stylish, fast-paced and brilliantly acted. By the way you dont have to be a fan of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s books to enjoy the film.
