Assassins – Movie Review | Weekend Movie Review
Remember how great movies were back in 1995? Classics like Billy Maddison, Batman Forever, Die Hard: With a Vengeance, Goldeneye, Casino, Money Train, and much more. The list could go on and on. This weekend, I decided to watch the old classic Assassin’s which was also released in 1995. Assassin’s featured Sylvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas, and Julianne Moore. The movie had an estimated budget of $50 million dollars and has earned over $80 Million dollars to date. The total runtime for the movie is 132 minutes.
The story behind assassin’s involves a notorious hitman named Robert Rath (played by Stallone) who has had a long career as an assassin and is looking to retire. While performing what would be his last hit, another assassin ends up killing the mark before he can complete the mission. Robert Rath learns that the other assassin is Miguel Bain (played by Antonio Banderas) and begins investigating who he is. Upset, and feeling betrayed by his contractor; Robert decides that he is now retired. However, when he is told the next contract is worth $2 Million dollars; he decides to do just one more mission.
The mark for the mission is simply known as Electra (played by Julianne Moore). She is known as an electronic espionage expert in the movie, but in reality; she is a hacker for better use of a word. Electra has intercepted a satellite communications feed which contains information considered extremely valuable to the contractor. Robert Rath tracks down Electra only to find out that Miguel Bain has also been contracted for the job. He decides, to side with Electra in order to pursue Miguel. While working with Electra, Robert begins to like her and decides to protect her as long as she helps him lure Miguel Bain. In exchange for their cooperation, Robert Rath is able to tell his contractor that he has retrieved the disk containing the satellite feed. The only catch is that he has now raised the price to $20 Million due to the contractor using Miguel Bain for a second time.
The contractor agrees to pay the amount and is told to deposit it in an off shore bank in Puerto Rico. Secretly, the contractor now places a hit on Robert Rath which is given to Miguel Bain. That is all I am going to write about the plot as I don’t want to give away the entire movie. Assassins is an action packed movie with lots of twists and surprises which make it interesting for the viewer. At some points, the movie seems a little slow paced. It probably could have been shortened down in run time but it isn’t too bad. An interesting piece of information about the movie is that it was written by the Wachowski Brothers who are known for writing The Matrix series. The movie received an MPAA rating R for violence.
Movie Rating:My Rating for Assassins: 7 stars out of 10Rating Summary: I have given Assassin’s a rating of 7 out of 10 because I feel that it was a good movie with lots of action and suspense. This is definitely one of Antonio Banderas’s best acting jobs out of all the movies he has been in. The plot is good and contains lots of surprises. The only downside to the movie is how dragged out it feels. None the less, it is a great movie with lots of entertainment value. Since it is so old, you can probably buy this movie for not too much money.
