Boiler Room – Movie Review
I`m sure we all have several movies which we can watch over and over again and never get bored of. One of my favourites is Boiler Room which is an amazing movie about the dark side of stock trading. Boiler Room was released on February 20th, 2000 (not sure if there is any significance to the date being 2/20/2000). The budget for the film was $8 Million dollars and has earned well over $50 Million to date. The total runtime for the film is 120 minutes and it has an MPAA rating of R. Honestly, I don’t understand how Taken 2 can receive a PG-13 rating while Boiler Room receives an R. My rating scale says that anyone 8 years of age or older should be able to watch this movie with a parent present. Boiler Room has a pretty good cast which includes Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Nia Long, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Ron Rifkin, Ben Affleck, and many more.
Boiler Room takes place in New York and focuses on Seth Davis (Giovanni Ribisi) who is a street smart 19 year old who dropped out of college in order to run his full time casino out of his apartment. Despite his success, Seth’s father is upset that his chosen business is illegal. His father is a judge and wants nothing more but for his son to get a legitimate job. One night, one of Seth’s high roller customers comes to his casino with a friend Greg (Nicky Katt) who wants to gamble. Seth finds out that Greg is a big shot at a stock broker firm called J.T. Marlin. Through this contact, Seth decides to apply for a job at the firm and see if he can become wealthy as well.
Everything is going exceptionally well for Seth. He lands the job and gets enough sales to become his own broker. He is keen for knowledge and uses his smarts to work his way up the company. However, not everything is as it seems. As Seth begins to learn more and more, not everything starts to look so clear. Seth is now forced to decide what he wants to do with his career and who he wants to be. That is all that I will say about the movie as I don’t want to give too much away. I strongly recommend that everyone watch this movie if you have not seen it already.
Overall, Boiler Room is a great movie which is great to watch either alone or with company. I find Boiler Room so good that I usually watch it 2-3 times or more every year. It is one of those movies where if I find out a friend hasn’t seen it, I make sure to put it on and watch it or let them borrow it. I would recommend everyone just buy the film because it is so old now that you can get it for a great price. If you don’t believe me though, at least spend the money to rent it and give it a watch.
